CVM recently gave men the chance to train up to be that father figure so many teenage boys desperately need.
So on 21 & 22 November, we had 9 men, from various CVM groups across the country, descend on the eXceL Project (XLP) Offices in the City of London at All Hallows London Wall.
The purpose of this training event was to discover more about the XLM model of mentoring and how to be equipped as Mentors and Mentor Co-ordinators to help young people make life changing decisions to reach their full potential.
Although XLP mentor young men and women, there is a desperate need for more men to come forward as mentors. And this is why we at CVM have got involved to partner with XLP. To encourage men across the country to take notice of this amazing and extremely rewarding endeavour and to consider giving of themselves for a relatively short period of time to make a difference in a young man’s life.
Here is why:
There are 4 women to every 1 man that volunteers to be a mentor.
And yet...
...for every 10 young people offered mentoring, 7 are boys and 3 are girls.
As XLP rightly stipulate, only a man can mentor with a boy and a women with a girl, we would really like to encourage you guys out there to consider being a mentor.
What we learnt on the training was:
Why Become a Mentor?
Those volunteering have said:
- It looks good on the CV!
- Learning a new skill
- They want to make a difference to society and the community in which they live
- It is congruent with their beliefs and how they would like to live out their Christian faith
How much time will it take?
- XLP are looking for individuals that can give up to 2 hours a week
- For a period of 12 months
What experience is required?
- None. Just be yourself
- No age limit to be a Mentor
- All training is given so you will be fully equipped for the role
The church is uniquely positioned in every community to reach out and make a significant difference in the lives of struggling young people in their area. For the men of the church, this is a great way to be living and leaving legacy.
We would urge you to commit this cause to prayer and to serious consider taking the next step to find out more. Why not have a go? Please contact us here...

Who is XLP and what is XL-Mentoring?
XLP was started by Patrick Regan OBE in 1996 after a stabbing in a school playground.
They are working to create positive futures for young people, seeing them achieve a strong sense of physical and mental wellbeing, making wise life choices and positively contributing to their families, communities and society.
XL Mentoring is about hope. It is the mentoring programme that is used to equip mentors to get alongside young people who are struggling and helping them see alternatives.
