I thought it might be fun to just do a quick top 3 on ideas for men’s events – we love a top 3 at CVM so the next three articles/blogs from me are exactly that.
Without further ado, number 3…
FIRE
There is something primal about a fire that doesn’t need to be dressed up or pitched to anyone, the fire will speak for itself and on a dark night, sitting round the heat and flame of an open fire together is powerful.
I will often have a fire going in the winter months in my back garden, controlled of course but it’s going. I will sit under the moon and sometimes read some WWII poetry as I find it has the raw ability to speak without the frill and gloss.
The men’s group that I am part of is always, always gathered around fire. We light a fire, we eat together, pray and tell and listen to our stories, the stuff we are in and the places we want to be moving towards.
This men’s group also reach outward, we run a MOB, a gathering for all men to sit around an even bigger fire. Slow cooked lamb over hot coals for 6 hours, axe and knife throwing, deep in some woodland. A host of men appear, men of Christian faith and none. It’s a powerful night and brings us around a fire.
The various lockdowns and world events have taken a huge impact on us all, the rising costs of life and the uncertainties of each day can really be heavy. As I am getting around the UK a bit and talking and listening to men, there is a desire to get out again. To meet, sit together, eat, hear story and be inspired to move outward again, with CVM to focus on introducing the men around us to Jesus.
It may be that for you, fire could be a gathering point. Have a think about it, it’s working for us.
